August 04, 2016Read Story Service Providers wanted for a focus group

The Center for Human Services Research at SUNY Albany, Empire Justice Center, NYS Office of Victims Services, and Pro Bono Net are hosting focus groups – one with crime victims & one with service providers – to better understand the current needs of crime victims in our State. The information from the focus groups will help inform how an on-line resource could assist crime victims get the civil legal services they need.

"The New York State Cost of Financial Exploitation Study is one of the most comprehensive studies to quantify both the financial and the non-financial costs of financial exploitation of vulnerable adults. This study includes the largest number of Adult Protective Services (APS) financial exploitation cases to date in any single state. In New York State, APS provides protective services to adults 18 and older who, because of physical or mental impairment, are unable to protect themselves from abuse, neglect, financial exploitation or other harm, and have no one else willing and able to assist responsibly"

The Council on Elder Abuse sponsored a press conference on May 31, 2016 to raise awareness for elder abuse in honor of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15, 2016. It was a very big success and many thanks go out to members of the Council who made it possible.

People Inc has scheduled the next certification training for the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program (LTCOP) program.  Legal Services for the Elderly is working with them to recruit volunteers who will undergo that training.


April 26, 2016Read Story Erie County offers its first senior dining program for LGBT community

"Cheektowaga resident Judy Goldstein sat with her friends at Preservation Pub, a Main Street restaurant and bar flanked by the Buffalo Medical Campus and the Allentown neighborhood. They chatted over paper-lined, plastic baskets filled with burgers, salads and orange slices.

“I’m really in love with the place,” Goldstein said.

The only thing out of the ordinary was a small brown envelope sitting next to each person’s meal, encouraging a $3 donation. That and the fact that most of the Monday afternoon patrons were gay or lesbian senior citizens and that County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was personally encouraging them all to eat and enjoy."
