March 16, 2016Read Story Buffalo man who beat his mother to death gets maximum prison sentence

"Lenora Tyes loved her family, but she refused to come to Thanksgiving dinner with them in 2014, because she felt she should stay home to fix a holiday meal for her son.

Two and a half months later, William R. Tyes fatally beat his mother and hid her body while lying to family, neighbors and police about what happened.

Tyes, 39, was planning to leave town before police caught up with him on Feb. 10, 2015, four days after his mother was last seen alive, prosecutors say."

"An estate lawyer who diverted $1.3 million from trust accounts – set up by an Orchard Park brother and sister to benefit charities – pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree grand larceny, a felony, according to the state Attorney General’s Office.

As part of his plea in New York County Supreme Court, Stephen M. Newman, 71, will forfeit $800,000 and surrender his licenses to practice law in New York and Florida."

"Erie County’s Department of Senior Services and The Pride Center of Western New York recently announced a new partnership that provides information and access to services for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer senior citizens.

The Silver Pride Project, which helps to provide activities and programs for LGBTQ seniors, includes regular office hours for a Senior Services employee who has been assigned to work with the local LGBTQ community at The Pride Center of Western New York, 200 South Elmwood Ave. in Buffalo."

"After reviewing complaints submitted by consumers, we have discovered a financial scam targeting older consumers who had previously been victims of fraudulent money-making schemes, such as bogus timeshare investments and in-home business opportunities. So-called asset recovery companies are contacting these past victims, promising to get refunds for a substantial fee, failing to deliver promised services, and leaving consumers financially worse off than before."
